This weekend saw a lot of buzz surrounding the presidential election of 2008. On the reublican side of things, the speech by Rudy G. in CA was indicative of things to come from "the nation's mayor." It seems that he is drawing rock star-like treatment from nearly everyone. I think he will soften somewhat on his social stands -- not flip-flop, but soften, and he will be a REAL contender. I think the nation looks at him as a leader, under crisis and our nation is in a crisis. People say all they want to say about what is the main issue with voters -- Iraq war, economy, health-care -- but the main thing is I believe national security. We want a leader who will put the safety and welfare of our children, homes and communities first. Rudy may fit that bill. He is an outsider (not from Washington, like MCain who comes from the US Senate which has not a good record of producing presidential winners), he is likable yet firm. Plus, if he can survive the primaries and get the nomination (inspite of my friend and brother James Dobson) I think he can defeat a liberal democrat -- be it Hillary or Osama, I mean Obama.
Which takes me to the democratic side of things. Obama announced his intentions on Saturday. It is frightening to see the absolute gushing from the national media for this guy. I think they feel like Joe Biden said. Here is a minority candidate who sounds good. Whether he will be good or is good is another matter altogether. I really think he will get further than Hillary and end up with the nomination -- barring a major scandal that the Clinton camp will try to bring up to destroy his chances. Which takes me to Mrs. Clinton. I think she comes across as divisive and calculating. She is the ultimate insider. People will be looking for the fresh approach of Obama, and he will win over Clinton.
In the genral election, I will predict (and this is all subject to change, perhaps daily between now and Nov. 2008) that Rudy will take on Obama; it will be close, but I think America will elect Rudy.
